What Do You Think of The Deréon Girls Ad?

by Jeanne on May 12th, 2008

dereon girls

I’ve been hearing so much about this House of Deréon ad for the Deréon Girls collection so I’m finally putting it up here.  I’ve heard people say that this looks like child pornography and all that but I don’t really agree and I don’t think that Beyoncé and Tina Knowles are deliberately trying to sexualize little girls.

What I see are a bunch of little girls who look like they’ve been playing dress-up in their mother’s closet.  Sure, it’s all over-the-top but I think that two-piece denim outfit (right side) is pretty cute and could look okay in real life.  I’m not sure about the jacket the little girl is wearing at the piano but the adult clothing line is just as ostentatious and slightly cheesy so what did people expect?

Tell me what you think - is this advertisement too much???

The source is Media Fake out.com that continuously post this story every 4 months like clockwork. When I was a little girl I walked around in my mothers 2 inch heels, dress hats, scarfs, you name it. What was wrong w/ that? Nothing!, just like this add. The Dereon girls clothes are cute. My niece received some outfits for her birthday recently. They are really colorful and playful. In fact Dereon is number 2 on the urban wear for girls, behind Baby phat. So I would tell Tina and Bey to keep up the good work.

Thank you, b4real. I don’t see what the big fuss is all about. Media Fakeout (lol) drives me crazy and I think everything about Beyoncé is blown so out of proportion.

If you want to talk about a parent who is peddling out their child, talk to Lindsay Lohan’s mother, Dina. She’s got Lindsay’s little sister Ali looking 30 years old already. It’s sad.

This ad does not bring up memories of playing dress-up for me. It looks a tad bit inappropriate. Are the heels for sale, too? I think there’s a different way to market clothes to our little girls. I happen to love Beyonce, and her style, and everything about her and her business, but this doesn’t sit well with me. Baby Phay didn’t have to put their models in 3-4-inch heels to become the top seller. Let’s try to keep little girls as exactly what they are — little girls.

On the other hand, I’ve got one question…is this ad even real?

@ KB, yes the ad is real and if you look closely at the heels, you’ll see they’re too big for the little girls wearing them. As far as my opinion of the ad, I think the ad is showing little girls being little girls–name me ONE little girl about their age or younger who hasn’t tried on mommy’s heels, makeup, or jewelry and I’ll call you a liar. Hell, my niece does it and she’s only 17 months! I think the ad is cute, the clothes are appropriate for kids, and if it wasn’t for people thinking this was Beyonce and Tina Knowles’ ad, nobody would say anything. But, people aren’t talking about how Solange and Jay-Z expanded the brand to do the little kids line, now are they? I don’t even think Bey and Tina are as active with the kids line as they are HOD.

Those clothes are apropos to whores and pimps. I guess just one feather boa wasn’t enough to drive the point home, so they put two in there.

I HOPE this is a joke.

I’m an African American father who is raising two girls and lives in the black community. This ad speaks to much of what is wrong in our community. We just seem to make dumb a*s decisions at every turn. Whomever approved the accessories in the ad is apparently an idiot. The idea is that we need to get ni**gers to spend money, so appeal to the lowest common denominator. Even if the cloths themselves are not actually innapropriate, the props in the advertisement are. So, my 9 year old daughter will not be wearing The House of Derion Girls cloths line, for o other reason than to prove to my daughter that you do not have to act like a Ni**er to be someone or get somewhere in this world. We really need to stop accepting this crap!

    @ Ipyna…

Was the whole “we need to get ni**gers to spend money, so appeal to the lowest common denominator” and “you do not have to act like a Ni**er to be someone or get somewhere in this world” REALLY necessary? I have a hard time believing your claim that you’re African American–especially since you felt the need to point it out

I love Beyonce, don’t get me wrong. I am an African-American woman myself, and I do have a 7 year old daughter, but looking at this ad, I felt it had sex appeal to it… Like I really feel that if a man who is addicted to child porn glanced at it, he would get hot from it… It’s over the top, and it doesn’t need to be. It takes away their innocence. The props are too much… The clothing has enouch “bling” and gold to it, but adding the extra props overdoes it… They look like little girls trying to be “clothed” video hoes… I’m sorry, that’s my opinion… I am a black woman, and I am a fan of Beyonce’s but this ad is not appealing to me…nor do I buy Baby Phat… Really tired of the urban wear. What ever happened to little girls wearing simple but pretty dresses… Stop trying to make our little girls grow up too fast!

Seems peopls w do anything to get some money in the bank. I believe she thinks that to sell the clothes, she needed to say to mothers “wow, now your kids can look like me too!” It’s terrible, its unacceptable and its a betrayal of confidence to mothers who let their children look like her. Before we know it, babys in their mothers tummies will also be pressurised to look sexy before they come out.

I’m absoloutley NOT a rasist but why does she only have on white kid? It’s the same with the grown-ups, only ONE white woman and she apperas on only one photo… Yes, Beyoncé’s black, her husband is and her babies will probably be, here sister, mother, father etc. But that doesn’t mean she’s not allowed to have white children in here commercials… it’s very strange.

I mean look at H&M, they got all sorts of skin-type.

Oh, and one more thing; the clothes looks terrible. Maybe she got inspired of the old people’s home… However, the clothes to grown-ups are fantastic anyway…

Josefine - What are you talking about? How many white kids would be appropriate? Dereon is an urban clothing line. Who do you think her targeted audience should be? She has fans of all ethnicities and that’s why she diversified the kid models.

But I guess like Bey said, she can’t please everyone!

I am the biggest Beyonce fan and I think that her kids clothing line is not that bad. The only thing is the high heels shoes. Young kids shouldn’t wear heels. They really need to stop calling her names I heard a lot of negative words about her and its ashame. Eventually Beyonce will cut some thing down on her kids clothing line. I still love her. Thank you

I heard about the controversy from watching Fox news. This seems to be the only photo available to look at and judge its merits by. If this is as scantily and inappropriate as it gets, then I don’t see the problem. It’s over the top and there’s no way any parent I know can afford to go shopping from this catalog on a regular basis. But to say it’s inappropriate I think is a bit much, and I’m the typical button-down conservative church going republican here. This looks like they got into the costume closet at the local theater.

Sorry women and decent men, you are not the ones I am worried about. You just don’t look at this the same way too many men do. This is the type of desensitization the pedifiles are hoping for. They want you to get used to it and our little girls too.

I am sure that the pedophiles are having a heyday over this ad which has little girls screaming ‘come and get me’.

I think that they over glamourized the clothes with the accessories just for the shoot cuz the clothes on the site aren’t as glam as the ones in the ad. They look like clothes my mom would have let me wear at that age.

I believe that the reason why they are wearing heels and the fact that they did the dressup theme is because they don’t have a shoe line for girls and they didn’t want them wear someone elses shoes. My question is: If they decided to crop the shoes out of the pic would you still think it was inappropriate.
